Kami rambles about religion

PermalinkOh, I'm sure this won't be controversial.
Heya! It’s Kami!
You know, as a trans person, I often hear people saying that media should be less divisive.
And you know what, they’re right. We’re gonna do something entirely uncontroversial today!
We’re gonna talk about religion!
Read ‘till the end where i rank the top ten religions! I wonder what place christianity ends up at?
…Alright, In case you couldnt tell, I was joking there.
Still, I wanna do a post just sort of rambling about my thoughts on religion.
First things first: I really don’t care what you believe in as long as you’re not using it to justify hurting others.
This is moreso about how my personal feeling have shifted overtime, not a callout post or whatever.
Anyways, i used to be pretty close to that stereotypical image of a reddit atheist.
I didn’t exactly try to like, ‘convert’ people to atheism or whatever,
but that was mostly just due to me always having been very shy and non-confrontational.
Still, i did tend to look down on religious people.
Nowadays I’m a lot more relaxed when it comes to that.
Religion can be a healthy coping mechanism, and in general people should just be able to
believe what they want if its not hurting anyone.
I mean, I’m still very much an atheist in the sense that i don’t think there’s a god out there.
But you know, Ive learned that trying to make that other peoples problem is quite stupid.
One thing I’ve seen floating around often is how atheism seems quite depressing and nihilistic.
Personally, I don’t really view it that way.
There’s comfort to be found in the fact that live just sort of ends at some point.
At least i wouldn’t want to spend the rest of eternity in some sort of afterlife, not matter how nice.
It also does make the time you have more special, i feel.
If you have eternity in the afterlife after you die, then really, whats the point in doing anything?
If you have infinite time anyways, then there’s not really a point to anything you end up accomplishing while you’re alive.
Part of the reason why the stuff we do has meaning is because we only have so much time.
At least in christianity, heaven also doesnt sound particularly comforting.
I’ll just be in eternal bliss, worshipping some deity?
I dont know about you, but that doesnt sound like my definition of fun.
A big part of the reason about me changing my stance on religion over time has definitely getting into a relationship with izanagi.
As it turns out, you can believe in a religion and not be a terrible person.
Who’d have thought?
I’ve also just started to appreciate the cultural aspects of it more.
I may not believe in christianity or islam or whatever, but the mythology is still incredibly interesting.
I mean. Theyre basically collaborative writing projects spanning hundreds of years.
There’s bound to be some cool stuff.
Oh, and obviously theres also a bunch of neat religious holidays to enjoy.
Although I’m very much not religious, i do still like me some christmas.
And hey, if iza wants to celebrate any muslim holidays with me at some point, id be up for that too.
If youre not actually participating in the religion, holidays just kind of mean free stuff and parties,
and hey, i cant say no to free stuff, you know me.
One thing i do really take issue with is how early religious education starts.
I don’t really care what you believe, but i do think that you should probably let your children decide for themselves what they want to believe in. I mean sure, let them know its an option, but i dont think you should be pushing your religion onto anyone. That includes children in this case.
Just, you know. Don’t present your religion as absolute fact. Make sure to let them know that there’s other belief systems out there.
Religious schools have also always seemed pretty weird to me.
Like, i somehow doubt its good for a child to put them into a school consisting only of people that share this specific set of beliefs.
I dont know, maybe part of that is just me being slightly annoyed at having to go to church every so often because i went to a religious school. I mean, to be fair, can you blame me? Sermons are quite boring.
There’s probably more to be said here, but its late and im tired.
I’ll see you again tomorrow for opinions that are definitely not at all political in nature.
