why the indie web is awesome

PermalinkSome ramblings from my other other blog. Yeah I know, i have too many of these.
You know, today while I was browsing bear blog, i came across the website of a weird sex cult. And it reminded me of why i love the web. Because this is what it’s all about. It’s about weird shit like this. The web is the greatest tool for communication we’ve ever invented. It lets us be deeply personal, share things we wouldn’t admit over our graves to the people we know in real life. It gives us the opportunity to be more like us than anywhere else. To be human. Because other places have expectations. They have rules. Of course, corporations have sanitized and exploited the web. Weird doesn’t sell. So the major platforms optimized for engagement. Who cares about being human, about sharing your passions. If you want the number to go up, do what everyone else is doing. But if you just go beyond those platforms to places like bearblog, the weird internet still exists. This is what surfing the internet is supposed to be like. It feels like an adventure. No algorithms (apart from the trending page, is suppose). You just dive in and observe the weird, wonderful mess that awaits you. This is the kind of place where you can find a weird sex cult right next to spicy trans girl hot takes and pictures of cute cats. And i love that. Because no matter how different the perspectives of all the people here are, and how much i may disagree with them, it’s all so human. And in a world full of ai slop and mindless consumerism, that’s so unbelievably refreshing.
